Frequently asked questions
Absolutely! We teach people of all skill levels - from complete beginners to skilled practitioners. Our training is designed for you to master the basics and build upon those skills into technical layers of complete mastery
No you do not have to be fit to start training. You will build strength, power, flexibility and endurance from consistent training.
Martial arts uses different muscle groups and energy systems compared to traditional sports so if you have never trained before, we are here to help and support you on your martial arts journey.
For training, you'll need a few basic pieces of equipment to get started. We recommend getting a good pair of hand wraps and boxing gloves for hand protection, as well as shin guards for leg safety. As you progress, you might also want to invest in a mouthguard and kick boxing shorts.
We have some equipment available for beginners, and we can guide you on what to get as you advance. It is best to have your own gear for your own safety and hygiene.
At your first session you can expect a warm and welcoming environment where we’ll introduce you to the basics. We'll start with a light warm-up to get your body ready with dynamic movement for the joints and muscles, followed by fundamental techniques that incorporate striking, stance and footwork.
Each session will vary depending on the lesson plan for the week. You will learn techniques through partner drills, pad work, or bag work. We incorporate bodyweight conditioning exercises to help you build resilience and strength for a full body work out.
At The Wat, we’re committed to creating a safe, supportive and respectful space for everyone.
To help maintain a positive training environment, we ask all students to follow these simple guidelines:
• Show respect to your instructors and fellow students at all times.
• Arrive on time and be prepared to train so classes can run smoothly.
• Stay focused, listen carefully to coaching, and follow instructions
• Communicate respectfully with your training partners.
• Help keep the space clean and organised
• Maintain good hygiene and wear proper training gear.
• Train with control — avoid unnecessary force during drills or sparring, and always put safety first.
• Bring a positive mindset, stay open to learning, and support others on their journey.
By following these expectations, we create a training culture built on discipline, respect and growth — so everyone at The Wat can learn, improve and enjoy their time.
As you start training at The Wat, avoiding a few common pitfalls will help you progress faster, train safely, and build confidence from day one. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
1. Leave your ego at the door: Focus on learning, not outdoing others. Controlled, respectful training helps you grow and keeps partners safe.
2. Listen to coaching instructions: Your instructors are here to guide your development. Applying the feedback will help you get the most out of the sessions.
3. Follow safety protocols: Use protective gear when required, communicate with your partner, and always train with control. Safety comes first.
4. Ask questions whenever you're unsure: If something doesn’t feel clear, ask. Questions help you grow, and your coaches are here to support your development.
5. Focus on technique first: Avoid relying on strength alone by prioritising proper form and fundamentals. Good technique keeps you safe and makes every movement more effective.
6. Build up gradually: Progress comes from consistency. Give your body time to adapt, build conditioning gradually, and make recovery part of your routine.
7. Always complete the warm-up: A proper warm-up prepares your muscles, improves mobility and significantly reduces the chance of injury. Don’t miss it.
8. Focus on your own progress: Everyone learns at a different pace – stay focused on improving and celebrate your progress, no matter how small
